The Amherstburg Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAAC)

Message from Chair: Kathy Hay
December, 2009
The Amherstburg Accessibility Advisory Committee commenced in early 2002, and presently meets about once a month. We are an “Advisory Only” Committee reporting to Town Council for final decision making on various accessibility issues, concerning the Town of Amherstburg. We are a 6 member team, with myself as Chair; Vice Chair Silvana Parks, Town Council Rep. Deputy Mayor Bob Bailey; Administration Rep. Brenda Percy, Essex Community Living Representative Michelle Jones- Rousseau; and member at large, Mr. Bill Wark. Together, we have begun to see change in the way accessibility is recognized, not only here in this community but throughout the world.
Over the past several years, headway is beginning here in Amherstburg. From a simple thing, as suggesting accessible bars on a bathroom stall, to a future “Multi – Use Recreational Complex”, including Canada’s very first “All Inclusive Miracle League Baseball Diamond”. all presently under construction in Larry Bauer Park for completion in 20l0; makes us very proud to say that we were a part of this achievement. We can also boast that all our young children can now enjoy an “All- inclusive Splash Pad”; built in 2007 to an accompanying “All inclusive Playground” built in 2008. These two projects alone have already helped to “put us on the map”, in the way of “Accessibility”. As a partnership between the Rotary Club, The Trillium Foundation, and the Town of Amherstburg, these projects have been vital to this success....This all reminds us of the necessity of having our group in the forefront of ensuring that attention regarding accessibility is given to as many projects as possible. We have seen the large amount of road and sidewalk construction having been undertaken during this past year. We applaud our Town Council and Public Works for improving our community, and yet attending to our safety concerns that we may bring to their attention from time to time. We can hopefully look back 20 years from now and be proud of all our accomplishments.
Although we have seen and are seeing, many projects taking shape in our town; there are still many endeavours that need to be added. We remain confident that with our Council support; this community will see many more come to fruition in the way of “accessibility for all”.
Thank you again for having us be part of Amherstburg’s future. Please take time to read our website to learn more about our group.
We always welcome your feedback.
Thank You
Kathy Hay, Chairperson
