As of November of 2002 a new regulation under the Municipal Act came into effect known as the Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways. This is a system of standards that would ensure that all municipal roads are inspected and maintained to at least a predetermined minimum standard. The Public Works Department is presently endeavouring to maintain and supercede the minimum standards.
The Public Works Department specifically looks after gravel resurfacing, grading and dust control, road patching; sign maintenance/replacement; stock inventory control; tree planting and trimming/removal on road allowances; street cleaning and litter pick up; sidewalk maintenance; catch basin maintenance and repairs; road closings and boulevard maintenance. It is also responsible for winter control operations including snow plowing and salting of roads, as well as ensuring the timely clearing of sidewalks.
There are 335 total kilometres of roads in the Town of Amherstburg, of which 210 km falls under the Town’s jurisdiction and a total of 27 bridges to maintain. Currently maintenance on the roads are performed in accordance with the Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways, Ontario regulation 239/02.
