Waste and Refuse Collection Program

As a result of the January 2012 tendering for refuse and yard waste collection services, the Town has entered into a 5-year contract with Windsor Disposal Services (WDS).  Effective April 2, 2012 all refuse and yard waste collection will be conducted by Windsor Disposal Services.  Please note the following items:

1) Refuse Pickup (Garbage & Trash)

  • **NEW**  The Town of Amherstburg Council approved the modification of the garbage collection routes and schedules at the November 13, 2012 Council Meeting.  The routes have changed from a 5-day per week collection schedule to a 4-day per week collection schedule for optimization purposes.  To determine your particular collection day, please review the route map here (1.21 MB).
  • Continue to place your refuse at the roadside the night before your scheduled garbage collection day.
  • Acceptable garbage collection containers include:
    • Plastic Bags
    • Plastic or Metal Cans
    • Herby Curby Bins
  • Garbage shall not exceed 45lbs. per container.
  • Items such as boxsprings, mattresses, couches, chairs and similar materials can be put out on any regular garbage collection day.

2) Yard Waste Collection

Yard waste collection will be provided in two methods:

A) Roadside Yard Waste Collection

  • Dedicated house to house pickup of yard waste from the curb line or edge of pavement.
  • Yard Waste collections will be conducted every second Monday from each of the two collection zones.

  • Alma Street will be the dividing boundary line between north and south collection zones.
  • Place yard waste at the roadside the night before your scheduled yard waste collection day.  The Contractor starts collecting at 6:00 am.
  • Roadside collection of yard waste is scheduled for alternating Mondays unless a collection day falls on a holiday.  That day's collection will be picked up the Saturday prior.

B) Thomas Road Yard Waste Depot

  • Situated at the Public Works Depot at 99 Thomas Road adjacent to the new water tower.
  • Will be open only on Wednesdays from 8:00am to 12:00pm and on Saturdays from 8:00am to 1:00 pm.
  • An attendant will be available to assist residents.
  • Residents may be required to show proof of Amherstburg address.
  • Thomas Road yard waste depot will operate from April 3, 2013 to November 30, 2013.

 

Yard Waste Includes:

  • Unlimited amounts of yard waste in clearly marked, reusable containers, paper yard waste bags, cardboard boxes or pruning bundles.
  • Plant material generated from gardening and yard maintenance, such as:
    • Grass Clippings
    • Leave
    • Garden Waste and Trimmings
    • Brush - brances more than 3 inches in diameter will not be collected.
    • Tree Trimmings - must be cut and bundled into four foot lengths and bundles shall be no larger than 2 feet in diameter.  Tree trimming bundles are restricted to 45 lbs. or less.
  • Approved containers for yard waste collection include paper  yard waste bags, reusable garbage cans or pails, or cardboard boxes.  Bags and boxes will not be returned.  PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

 

Yard Waste Does Not Include:

  • The following items will not be collected:
    • Dimensional Lumber
    • Furniture
    • Any item manufactured from wood.
    • Food Waste from Kitchens
    • Sod
    • Sand
    • Soil
    •  Noxious Weeds
    • Flower Pots or Trays
    • Animal Droppings 
    • Construction Materials
    • Rocks
    • Logs or branches larger than 3 inches in diameter.
    • Tree Stumps
  • These above noted items may be delivered to the Public Drop Off Depots in Windsor or Kingsville. 
  • Large diameter branches or significant amounts of yard waste resulting from tree removals or forestry related reasons may require the use of a contractor or private landscaper/tree service and require delivery to the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority Public Drop Off Depots.

3) White Goods / Steel Goods / Appliances Pickup

White Goods is currently a service contracted by the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority.  White good items include metal items such as appliances, air conditioners, hot water tanks, etc and are collected on the 4th Thursday of each month at no charge. Please phone (519) 736-3664 the week before to be placed on the list for pick up.

 

4) Christmas Tree Collection Program

Two (2) special Christmas tree collection days are conducted on the first two Saturdays in January for the entire Town.  Please remove all decorations, stands and plastic bags prior to placing at the roadside.
