2018 Election

The Next Municipal Election is Monday, October 22, 2018

 

Nomination Period: commences on May 1, 2018 at the Clerk's Office during regular office hours.  (Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm)

Nomination Day: Friday, July 27, 2018 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the Clerk's Department.

Election Campaign Period: begins on the day a nomination for office is filed and ends on December 31.  A contribution SHALL NOT be made to or accepted by or on behalf of a person unless he or she is a candidate.

 

Key Dates:

Election Day:              Monday, October 22, 2018

Nomination Day:         Friday, July 27, 2018 until 2:00 PM

Nomination Period:     May 1 to July 27, 2018 (until 2:00 PM) Inclusive

Advanced Polls:          October 3, 2018 and October 13, 2018

 

Pursuant to the requirements of the Municipal Elections Act, the Town of Amherstburg will be conducting an election in 2018 for the following offices:

 

Municipal:

  • Mayor, to be elected at large
  • Deputy Mayor, to be elected at large
  • 5 Councillors, to be elected at large

 

School Board Trustees (1 each):                                                         Nominations to be received by:

  • Greater Essex County District School Board                                       Town of LaSalle
  • Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board                                    Town of LaSalle
  • Conseil Scolaire Viamonde Geographic Area #10                               City of Windsor
  • Conseil Scolaire Catholique Providence Secteur  Geographique #6  Town of Amherstburg                                      

 

Qualifications for Candidates and/or Electors:

To be a candidate, you MUST be a qualified elector.  A person is entitled to be an elector if, on Voting Day (October 22, 2018) he or she:

a)         resides in the local municipality, or is the owner or tenant of land there, or the spouse of such owner or tenant;

b)         is a Canadian citizen;

c)         is at least 18 years old; and,

d)         is not prohibited by the Elections Act or any other legislation from voting or holding Municipal Office.

Voting Method:

For the 2018 Municipal Election, the Town of Amherstburg will utilize the traditional method of voting whereby electors will attend a prescribed polling location (to be announced at a later date) to cast their ballot.  Electronic tabulators will be utilized to assist in the counting of the ballots.  This is the same method that was used in the 2014 election.

 

Procedures for 2018 Vote and Vote Counting Equipment

 

Voter Eligibility:

To vote in the municipal election, you must be a qualified elector.  That means, on Voting Day you MUST be:

  • a resident of the Town of Amherstburg, or an owner or tenant of the land in the Town, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • at least 18 years old; and,
  • not prohibited from voting by law

The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 prohibits the following individuals from voting:

  • any person who is not qualified;
  • a person who is serving a sentence or imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution;
  • a  corporation;
  • a person acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity;
  • a person who has been convicted of corrupt practices under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 if voting day in the current election is less than five years after voting day in the election in respect of which he or she was convicted; and,
  • anyone who is prohibited by law from voting

 

Voters List:

The Town of Amherstburg in conjunction with the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) attempts to keep the voters list current.  In an effort to ensure that you are on the voters list, we would ask that you contact the municipal offices at (519) 736-0012 or visit www.voterlookup.ca  if you have:

  • recently moved into the municipality;
  • have attained the age of 18;
  • have changed your address within the Town of Amherstburg; and,
  • have changed your school support
