 What is community based policing?
 Community Based Policing is a form or way of policing which emphasizes citizen interaction and participation in solving problems.
 What is our goal?
 Our primary goal is to work co-operatively with individual citizens, groups of citizens, and both public and private organizations to identify and resolve issues, which potentially affect the "livability" or specific neighborhoods, areas, or the town as a whole.
 What can you do?
 We strive to actively involve citizens, through a variety of ways. We use volunteers made up of citizens that are students, retired, disabled, male and female, all of those who represent our diversity, in our prevention initiatives, for public feedback and for input. We seek to educate the public about police work in a variety of ways, including publications, web sites, town meetings, and our Amherstburg Community Policing Committee meetings.
 Where have you seen us?
 Perhaps you have noticed that there have been quite a few changes in the Navy Yard Park; better lighting, less vandalism, more patrol. This is due to community involvement through the Amherstburg Community Policing Committee Park Watch Volunteers.
 What are we working on now?
  • "Operation Lookout"
  • Stop impaired driving - report it to police.
  • Parkwatch & riverlights displays

River lights displays are in the winter and spring, summer and fall gardens.  Park watch has expanded to include several parks in the Amherstburg area. 

  • Annual bike rodeo

The annual bike rodeo, usually held in May, teaches people of all ages, primarily children who are just beginning to ride, road safety and provides safety equipment such as lights, bells, and reflectors.

We are always looking for dedicated individuals to volunteer and make our committee as successful as possible.

Crime Stoppers

 Rationale

Crime Stoppers is a registered, non-profit charitable organization, structured as a working alliance between the Community, the Media and various Police agencies. The program provides a medium for tipsters wishing to remain anonymous to provide valuable information to assist police in their investigations. Crime Stoppers encourages people to call with information to solve crimes already committed, crimes about to occur or wanted persons. Tipsters are assigned a confidential code number. The identity of the tipster is never known and then contact with The Program is by means of their confidential code number.

All tipsters are eligible to a cash reward of up to $1,000.00. The type of crime solved, number of arrests, etc. will determine the amount of the award. Money for the operation of Crime Stoppers and rewards is raised from the private sector by Members of the Board of Crime Stoppers. The Board is comprised of citizens throughout Windsor and Essex County.

Co-Operative Education

 Rationale
 Co-operative Education is a term used to describe a course in which students earn credits both in school and out of school. It is a three-way partnership between the student, the school and the employer. Co-operative Education courses provide opportunities for closer association of students with working police officers who are willing to show their knowledge and experience.
The students have an excellent opportunity for career exploration and career decision-making.
 Department Responsibility
  • Support and participate in the program.
  • Provide a job placement profile.
  • Assist with an individual Learning Plan for each student.
  • Offer a safe and satisfactory training environment.
  • Assign a training supervisor.
  • Assist in the evaluation process.
  • Treat the student as a regular trainee.
  • Insurance
    • Students are covered through an extensive Board of Education liability insurance policy.
  • Worker's Compensation
    • Students are covered by Worker's Compensation through the Ministry of Education during school time on the job. The employer is responsible for the coverage beyond scheduled work hours.
  • Transportation
    • Students are expected to find their own means of transportation to and from the placement.
  • Duties
    • Assist clerical staff as directed.
    • Assist Criminal Investigations Branch as directed.
    • Observe court proceedings.
    • Will not be allowed to patrol with Uniform Officers or become involved in occurrences or investigations.
    • Will not receive use of force training or firearms training.
    • Assist Community Service Branch in the implementation and operations of various projects.
 Supervisor's Responsibility
  • Keep a record of the student's attendance.
  • Contact the teacher immediately if there is a problem or accident.
  • Complete the Employer/Student progress reports.
  • Discuss the progress report with the student.
  • Set aside appropriate time for guidance and assistance.
  • Discuss the student's progress with the teacher/monitor.
Student's Responsibility
  • Report to work as scheduled except for the non- reporting days outlined in the schedule.
  • Work in a courteous, responsible and business- like manner. Meet the department expectation of dress and behaviour.
  • Notify training supervisor and co-op teacher before 9:00 a.m. and inform them that they are unable to report for work due to illness or emergency.
  • Sign release of liability and confidentiality forms.
Selection Process
  • Co-op teachers recommend suitable placement students.
  • Resumes are required to be presented.
  • CPIC and local checks are conducted.
  • Liaison co-op teachers are informed of successful/unsuccessful students.
  • Co-operative Education Students will be assigned to the clerical staff for supervision and direction.
