Cat Control Programs

ATTENTION:

Final Release: Spay and Neuter Vouchers will be available beginning August 14, 2020.  The release will continue until vouchers are used or the date of expiry, of October 31, 2020. 

There will be special procedures in place due to COVID-19 for the issuing of vouchers.  All vouchers must be redeemed by October 31, 2020.

The Town of Amherstburg supports cat control programs within the community: 

Cat Intake Program 

Residents of the Town of Amherstburg are able to surrender stray cats to the Windsor/Essex Humane Society.

Stray cats will be accepted without a surrender fee. Residents should bring identification confirming their Amherstburg address.

Owner surrendered cats will be accepted from residents of Amherstburg for the usual surrender fee.

Spay and Neuter Voucher Program for Feral Cats - 2020

 The Town of Amherstburg will release 160 vouchers valued at $50 each:

  • 90 vouchers will be allocated to residents to address the feral cat population within the Town of Amherstburg.
  • 10 vouchers will be allocated to low income cat owners.
  • 60 vouchers will be issued to Spay Neuter Assist Program (SNAP) for Cats and the Cat Assistance Team (C.A.T).  These two community cat organizations operate in the Town of Amherstburg to assist in controlling the feral cat population in the Town of Amherstburg.

Resident Spay and Neuter Vouchers:

Resident vouchers are only intended for use for the feral cat population in Amherstburg. Veterinarians and animal clinics participating in the Program will be unable to spay or neuter owned cats. 

Residents may provide completed applications to the Licensing Officer at Town Hall. A piece of identification with proof of residency in Amherstburg is required. 

A maximum of 2 spay and neuter vouchers per household are available for feral cats.  Each voucher is valued at $50.00 and can be used at participating veterinary clinics.

All veterinarian and animal clinics in Windsor and Essex County have been contacted about participating in the Town of Amherstburg Spay and Neuter Program. Vouchers will be redeemable only at veterinarian and animal clinics who have agreed to participate in the program. 

Quantities are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

Low Income Cat Owner Voucher:

Vouchers for owned cats are reserved for low-income families.

One voucher will be issued per household.

Residents may provide completed applications to the Licensing Officer at Town Hall. A piece of identification with proof of residency in Amherstburg is required. Proof of income for members of the household is also required.

Community Cat Organizations: 

Amherstburg is home to 2 community-based volunteer cat organizations who tirelessly work to assist the feral cat population in the Town of Amherstburg including trap, neuter, and return programming.  

The Town of Amherstburg has provided the organizations a total of 60 vouchers this year to support Amherstburg feral cats.
