The primary mandate of the Amherstburg Accessibility Advisory Committee is to advise Council on the preparation, implementation and effectiveness of the municipality's Accessibility Plan for all municipal properties, facilities and services as regulations prescribe. The Committee is also responsible for carrying out all obligations of an Accessibility Advisory Committee as established by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The Act states:
(a) advise the council about the requirements and implementation of accessibility standards and the preparation of accessibility reports and such other matters for which the council may seek its advice under subsection (5);
(b) review in a timely manner the site plans and drawings described in section 41 of the Planning Act that the committee selects; and
(c) perform all other functions that are specified in the regulations.
The Amherstburg Accessibility Advisory Committee is comprised of one (1) Council member and four (4) appointed members from the public. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requires that a majority of the Committee's members be persons with disabilities.
The 2021 Town of Amherstburg Multi-Year Accessibility Plan explains how the Town will meet accessibility standards over the following 5 years. This process involves ongoing public engagement and feedback to drive the plan. For further information on the plan or, to request it in additional formats, please reach out to accessibility@amherstburg.ca.
