Commissioner of Oaths

The Town provides the services of a Commissioner of Oaths to Town of Amherstburg residents during regular business hours.

Please contact the Clerk's Department between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday to arrange a mutually convenient time for signing your documents.  Commissioning of documents will be completed by appointment only.

Requirements

In order to have a document commissioned, all parties required to sign the document must be present and must provide valid photo identification.

For Amherstburg residents, a $22.00 fee is charged per document.

For Non-Amherstburg residents, a $28.00 fee is charged per document.

Please note that documents that are in any language other than English will not be commissioned, as we cannot validate the information that is sworn.

We reserve the right to refuse commissioning services of any document.

Documents witnessed/signed by a Commissioner of Oaths from the Town of Amherstburg will only include the following (fees may apply):

  • Documents pertaining to Town of Amherstburg business
  • Legal name change
  • Delayed statements of birth
  • Vehicle ownership changes
  • Pension documents

A Commissioner of Oaths from the Town of Amherstburg will not witness/sign the following:

  • Wills
  • Living Wills
  • Power of Attorney
  • Divorce
  • Separation
  • Custody agreements
  • Passports or visas
  • Trust funds

Notary public

A Commissioner of Oaths is not the same as a notary public. A Commissioner has authority to administer oaths and take affidavits. A notary public has a much broader authority. If your document requires notarization or you need certified copies of documents, then you need to contact a lawyer or a notary.
