Changes to the Municipal Elections Act

Bill 181, The Municipal Elections Modernization Act, 2016, came into effect June 9, 2016 and make changes to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 for the 2018 municipal election.

So you want to run for Council?

Potential candidates are encouraged to watch for the "So you Wish to Run for Council" online course brought to you by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). This online course will help individuals better understand what being a member of Municipal Council brings. Course content covers:

  • Reasons to run and reasons that might be constraining;
  • What you should know before you run for office;
  • Dealing with the media;
  • Working with others;
  • The roles of Council members and staff;
  • What the true power and influence of Municipal Government is; and
  • Transparency and accountability for individuals and Council.
