Heritage Conservation
The policy of the Town of Amherstburg’s Official Plan encourages the restoration, protection, conservation, and maintenance of the Town’s archaeological and heritage resources, which include buildings and structures of historical and/or architectural value, as well as the natural heritage landscape. All new development or redevelopment permitted by the policies and designations of this Plan shall have regard for the conservation of heritage resources.
It shall be the policy of the Town to use all relevant legislation and programs whenever possible to encourage the preservation and enhancement of heritage resources and to develop a greater awareness of the value of heritage conservation in the community. When appropriate and necessary, the Town will use the provisions of the Ontario Heritage Act to conserve, protect and enhance the Town’s heritage.
Heritage Committee
The Heritage Committee advises and assists the Town Council on matters related to the conservation of property of cultural heritage value or interest.
Heritage Register
The Register identifies property situated in the Town that is of cultural heritage value or interest. The Register lists all properties that have been designated (legally protected) under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.
The Register also includes property that has not been designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act but that Council believes to be of cultural heritage value of interest. Such properties are known as ‘Properties of Interest’.
Provincial Designation
One site in Amherstburg – Christ Church (1819)- is designated by the Province of Ontario through the Ontario Heritage Trust. Learn more (The site is also designated by the Town of Amherstburg.)
Federal Designations
The National Sites and Monuments Board of Canada commemorates numerous sites, events and people of national historic significance in Amherstburg. (Some of these sites are also designated by Town of Amherstburg) Learn more
Conservation Incentives
The Town of Amherstburg offers a property tax rebate of up to 40% of yearly property taxes for the conservation of properties designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.
Applicants to the program are advised to follow best practices in heritage conservation as outlined in the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada (2010). A summary of the Standards can be found here.
Additional conservation incentives for heritage resources are being developed as part of the Community Improvement Plan. Additional information about these incentives will be posted when they become available.
