Heritage Conservation

The policy of the Town of Amherstburg’s Official Plan encourages the restoration, protection, conservation, and maintenance of the Town’s archaeological and heritage resources, which include buildings and structures of historical and/or architectural value, as well as the natural heritage landscape. All new development or redevelopment permitted by the policies and designations of this Plan shall have regard for the conservation of heritage resources.

It shall be the policy of the Town to use all relevant legislation and programs whenever possible to encourage the preservation and enhancement of heritage resources and to develop a greater awareness of the value of heritage conservation in the community. When appropriate and necessary, the Town will use the provisions of the Ontario Heritage Act to conserve, protect and enhance the Town’s heritage.

Heritage Committee

The Heritage Committee advises and assists the Town Council on matters related to the conservation of property of cultural heritage value or interest.

Heritage Register

The Register identifies property situated in the Town that is of cultural heritage value or interest. The Register lists all properties that have been designated (legally protected) under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.

The Register also includes property that has not been designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act but that Council believes to be of cultural heritage value of interest. Such properties are known as ‘Properties of Interest’.
