Legalization of Recreational Cannabis

Cannabis Legalization

On October 17, 2018 cannabis was legalized in Canada.

Ontario legislation provides the regulatory framework for the purchase and use of recreational cannabis in Ontario. The legislation:

  • Prohibits the sale of recreational cannabis to anyone under the age of 19.
  • Lists where the use of cannabis will be permitted
  • Prohibits youth (under 19) from possessing, cultivating, consuming,  and sharing any amount of recreational cannabis.
  • Addresses illegal selling, including illegal storefront dispensaries.
  • Allows adults to possess up to 30 grams of legal cannabis. Note: The Ontario Cannabis Control Act aligns with the proposed federal adult possession limited that is set at 30 grams.
