Legalization of Recreational Cannabis

On October 17, 2018 cannabis was legalized in Canada. 

On November 15, 2018, the Town of Amherstburg held a Public Information and Consultation Meeting to recieve resident feedback about cannabis retail stores within the Town of Amherstburg.

Public request for feedback was also available at from November 16, 2018 until November 30, 2018.

Council to consider report on cannabis retail stores on Monday January 21st, 2019 at the Special Council Meeting beginning at 6pm.

Ontario legislation provides the regulatory framework for the purchase and use of recreational cannabis in Ontario. The legislation:


  • Prohibits the sale of recreational cannabis to anyone under the age of 19.
  • Lists where the use of cannabis will be permitted
  • Prohibits youth (under 19) from possessing, cultivating, consuming,  and sharing any amount of recreational cannabis.
  • Addresses illegal selling, including illegal storefront dispensaries.
  • Allows adults to possess up to 30 grams of legal cannabis. Note: The Ontario Cannabis Control Act aligns with the proposed federal adult possession limited that is set at 30 grams.
