Heritage Properties

A heritage property, in the context of the Ontario Heritage Act, is a building, site, or area deemed to have cultural heritage value or interest. This designation provides protection against demolition or substantial alterations, ensuring its preservation for the benefit of current and future generations. Heritage properties can include various types of assets, such as residential, commercial, industrial, or agricultural buildings, monuments, structures, natural features, landscapes, and archaeological sites.

Heritage properties can be recognized on the Municipal, Provincial, or Federal level.

The Municipal Heritage Register identifies property situated in the Town that are of cultural heritage value or interest. The Register lists all properties that have been designated (legally protected) under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act.

The register also includes properties that have not been fully designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act but have cultural heritage value. These properties are known as ‘Properties of Interest.

Municipally recognized properties can be individually designated or be located in a Heritage Conservation District.
