Provincial Heritage Recognition
In Ontario, while the majority of heritage properties are designated at the municipal level, a distinct and significant class of properties are recognized for their importance to the province as a whole. These "provincially recognized" sites are identified through several mechanisms under the purview of the Government of Ontario and its agencies.
Christ Church (1819)
The church at 317 Ramsay Street, known as Christ Church Amherstburg, is a one-storey brick church designed in the Neoclassical style and constructed in 1818-1819.
Christ Church is associated with Lt. Colonel William Caldwell (c. 1750-1822), Rev. Richard Pollard (1753-1824) and Fort Malden (Amherstburg). It is the oldest church in Essex County.
Belle Vue
Belle Vue is a two-storey, white painted, brick house constructed between 1816 and 1819 in the Palladian style. The house consists of a central rectangular block that is flanked by two wings and features a small portico above the main entrance.
It is of outstanding architectural importance in that it ranks among the very finest pieces of Palladian architecture in Canada.
