Now Hiring: Certified Mechanic
The Town of Amherstburg is currently recruiting for a full-time Certified Mechanic (310T and 310S).
NATURE OF WORK:
The Certified Mechanic repairs and services the Town’s vehicles, tractors, and trailers including heavy trucks, construction equipment, and a variety of truck mounted equipment by diagnosing, repairing or replacing damaged or defective parts. Other duties include administering preventative maintenance programs, ordering parts and keeping inventory, and maintaining vehicle maintenance records.
CONTROLS OVER THE WORK:
Reporting to the Manager, Roads and Fleet, this position will be part of a municipal workforce and will maintain vehicles and equipment for the Parks and Recreation Services, Public Works Services, Building Services, Environmental Services, Police and Fire Services within the municipality.
APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPEREINCE:
- Successful completion of Grade 12 education (OSSD or equivalent) is required, plus 8000 hour apprenticeship
- A Certificate of Qualification in Automotive Service and Technician AND a Certificate of Qualification in Truck and Coach from the Ontario College of Trades is required
- Must be a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Trades Must possess and maintain valid Class DZ Ontario driver’s licence in good standing
- Must have 3 to 5 years working experience at journeyman level as a mechanic performing vehicle and equipment repairs
- Must have knowledge of Windows computer software
- Must have some ability in arc welding (MIG or stick), and be capable of using an oxy-acetylene torch for brazing, minor welding and cutting
- Must be capable of troubleshooting and road testing own repairs to ensure they meet the Ministry of Transportation safety and roadworthiness requirements
- Knowledge of complex industrial and mobile hydraulic equipment and systems
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Repair and maintain heavy trucks, snowplows, hoists, graders, backhoes, tractors, grass cutting equipment, automobiles and other machinery
- Replace and adjust brakes, install special accessories such as fans, heaters and other miscellaneous equipment
- Repair bodies and chassis by straightening and welding fenders, bumpers, axles and framework
- Checking and adding oil, water, antifreeze and essential fluids
- Perform repairs and overhauls on various components including; engines, brakes, transmissions, differentials, axle assemblies, hydraulic controls, pumps, air compressors, and electrical components such as alternators and starters
- Changing oil, lubricating automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment
- Changing and repairing tires and tubes, servicing and installing batteries, replacing light bulbs, lenses, fuses, signal light flashers, and windshield wiper blades
- Making visual inspections of component safety features and reporting and recording malfunctions of components
- Operate available diagnostic equipment and interact with operators to determine defects. Complete the required actions in a competent, safe and timely manner.
- Road and field test units
- Utilize and adhere to shop maintenance procedures, and information systems and complete work while adhering to repair manuals, technical bulletins, operating and procedural manuals, schematics, SDS sheets and safety handbooks
- Record and complete all administrative procedures such as inspection sheets, authorization forms, provincial certification forms, time entries, inspections, etc.
- Perform other related duties such as participate in safety and information meetings, environmental meetings, training programs
- Maintain records of vehicle maintenance, repairs, fuel usage and related operations
- Assists to develop and implement shop budget
- Develop and maintain a parts inventory and an inventory control system
- Provide information and records to department management concerning the vehicle maintenance program
- Other duties as assigned

POSITION PARTICULARS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed in awkward positions requiring use of force and leverage when installing and removing parts. Occasional lifting over 20 kg. Some work is performed outside in wet, cold conditions while working on equipment.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time, climb, stoop, squat and bend to diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment
- The 2025 rate of pay for this position is $39.97/hour
