Now Hiring: Crossing Guard
Reporting to the Deputy Clerk, the Crossing Guards are responsible for the safe passage of pedestrians at a specified school crossing, stopping traffic in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Town of Amherstburg guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Directs and guides pedestrians (including students and youth) across streets during the school year, stopping traffic as required, in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Corporation guidelines on designated roadways.
- Directs pedestrians to cross roadways only after traffic has come to a complete stop;
- Remains in the middle of the roadway, with a stop sign elevated and visible, until the last pedestrian has finished crossing the roadway;
- Takes every precaution to ensure that stopping traffic is conducted with the greatest amount of safety and provide right of way to emergency vehicles;
- Ensures punctual arrival at the designated crossings and remains there until the end of the shift; ·
- Wears Town-issued reflective vests or jackets, and other issued articles of clothing, and uses the issued stop signs and other provided equipment while on duty;
- Responsible for the good care, proper maintenance and serviceable condition of the uniform and equipment provided and promptly notifiies the supervisor of the loss, damage, or unserviceable condition of any issued property;
- Notes any unusual conditions at their designated crosswalk before students arrive. (Buildup of ice and snow, traffic lights out, signs blocking vision, construction, etc.).
- Reports any incidents occurring while on duty to the supervisor;
- Understands and adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, and Town By-laws, policies and procedures as they relate to the Crossing Guard position; and · Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to remain alert and perform responsibilities quickly and safely, required;
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with school children, pedestrians, residents, school officials and police, required;
- Ability to move briskly and repeatedly in and out of intersection and stand for 45 to 60 minutes at a single time, in all weather conditions, required;
- Ability to extend an arm out parallel to shoulder holding a “STOP” sign (weight of approximately 5 pounds) for up to one minute frequently, required;
- Ability to effectively see, hear and observe oncoming traffic at a safe distance (approximately 300 feet), required;
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Highway Traffic Act as it relates to the job, required;
- A Police Vulnerable Sector Check, required;
- Previous experience dealing with the public and/or children, considered an asset.
Employment Level: Part-time
Work Conditions
- Crossing Guards must be available for morning and afternoon shifts during the school year, as required;
- Duties are performed outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., extremes of heat, cold, precipitation) in which schools remain open, to assist pedestrians travelling to and from school;
- Required to move briskly and repeatedly in and out of intersection and stand for 45 to 60 minutes at a single time, and extend an arm out parallel to shoulder holding a “STOP” sign (weight of approximately 5 pounds) for up to one minute frequently;
- Plausible opportunity exists for stressful interaction with members of the Public who may be encountered in the public areas.
The 2025 wage range for this position is $17.95/hr to $20.50/hr
