Now Hiring: Recreation Program Instructor - Skate Patrol

Do you love to skate? The Town of Amherstburg is currently recruiting for self-motivated, team focused individuals to fill the position of Program Instructor, specifically for Skate Patrollers.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation Programming and Special Events, the Program Instructor is responsible for the overall leadership, planning, and implementation of various recreational programs and services to the community throughout the year. Specifically, this position creates, leads and facilitates a variety of classes and events while ensuring the safety, well being and enjoyment to participants of all ages. Programs offered include the following and vary throughout the year depending on interest and availability: Drop-in-Programs, Parent & Tot, Preschool, Youth, Adult and Senior and fall under the categories of Sports & Fitness, Educational, Arts & Crafts, Dance, Birthday Parties and Special Events.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement daily program plans and ideas for recreation programs, which incorporate a variety of activities (i.e. active, passive and cooperative games, arts and crafts, drama, etc.)
  • Timely completion and submission of program plans to the Supervisor
  • Report any problems or concerns to the Supervisor
  • Ensure the safety and security of all participants in Town programs
  • Maintain a clean work environment (includes daily cleaning of areas used for recreation programs)
  • Be familiar with and uphold applicable department policies and procedures
  • Ensure all program equipment is in place, and in good working order
  • Maintain a positive public image at all times
  • Demonstrate a helpful and pleasant presentation when dealing with the public
  • Timely completion of all required reports (accident/incident, statistics, etc.)
  • Collect admission fees and ensure proper handling of collections as designated by management
  • Uphold and assist with Health and Safety within the facility by stopping or preventing all unsafe activity, including familiarizing the public with the facility rules
  • Keep full attention on the duty of the assigned area
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to all incidents, accidents, and emergencies
  • Be familiar with and able to carry out the emergency procedures of the facility
  • Other duties, as may be assigned

Qualifications:

  • Current valid Standard First Aid and CPR Basic Rescuer (Level C) and maintain validity for the full period of employment, required
  • High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development, considered an asset for youth programs
  • Safe Food Handling certification, considered an asset for instructors of camp programs
  • Up-to-date Fitness Instructor Certifications, considered an asset for Fitness related programs
  • Having the ability to skate, considered an asset for on ice related programs and activities

Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) months experience working in the sports/recreation field, required
  • Experience instructing a program or leading a group in an event (Leadership course through school, volunteer experience, etc.), required
  • Experience teaching Karate, Gymnastics, Dance, Fitness, Yoga, Zumba and Arts considered an asset. Current and valid certifications may be required.
  • Experience working with youth in the field of Early Childhood or Youth Education or Social Service Work, considered an asset
  • Experience in a Day Camp environment, considered an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, flexibility to deal with diverse individuals and confidence to effectively address challenging situations
  • Self-motivated individual with strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team environment as well as independently
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm and continued positive attitude

Employment Level: Part-time

Work Conditions:

  • Work will be conducted in the recreation programming areas including the Libro Centre, local schools, and parks
  • Hours of work will vary based on programming needs for all programs (e.g. fitness classes and programs, day camp, public skating, drop-in activities and special events)
  • Occasional exposure to the elements, hazardous conditions and materials
  • Occasional exposure to unpleasant or escalated situations or behaviours by service users or the public
  • Uniforms must be worn at all times and kept in good, clean condition
  • Program Instructors must be ready to start working at least fifteen minutes before the shift begins
