Now Hiring: Volunteer Firefighters

Volunteer Firefighters are responsible for the delivery of fire protection services to Amherstburg residents. Volunteer Firefighters are also required to participate in regular and ongoing training and maintenance upkeep of the fire station and equipment. Volunteer Firefighters complete safety sensitive physical work of a hazardous nature involving fighting fires, salvage, rescue work, hazardous materials, and medical responses under the direct supervision of superior officers. Amherstburg’s Fire Department operates out of stations across the Municipality. All members of the department are required to carry pagers.

Volunteer Firefighters are compensated as per the Town’s Wages and Benefits Agreement for Volunteer Firefighters, as amended.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to fire, rescue, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, and other emergencies assigned to their respective station
  • Responsible for acquiring and maintaining a valid class DZ driver’s licence with an acceptable driving record
  • Must be available and participate in a minimum of 70% of the required annual  training and attend a minimum of 40% of response calls
  • Lays and connects hose lines, nozzles and other related equipment
  • Holds fire hose and directs water streams
  • Operates a pressure pump, as assigned
  • Operates elevating devices, as assigned
  • Drives fire apparatus, as assigned
  • Carries, erects and climbs ladders
  • Operates rescue equipment
  • Performs salvage work at fire and emergency scenes
  • Performs ventilation by making openings in buildings
  • Enters burning or contaminated buildings, structures and other areas to fight fires and/or perform rescues while wearing required clothing and safety equipment
  • Assists in administering first aid to the injured
  • Assists in cleaning firefighting equipment following an emergency call or practice session
  • Cleans and maintains fire station areas, as scheduled
  • Assists with the delivery of fire prevention and education programs
  • May be required to make decisions and work without supervision until a more senior officer arrives on scene
  • Understand and adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Town Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Must be a resident of the Town of Amherstburg
  • Responsible for acquiring and maintaining a valid class DZ driver’s licence with an acceptable driving record (not required for initial hire)

Education

  • Minimum Grade 12 education or GED equivalency,  required
  • Successful completion and maintenance of departmental tests and regulatory standards established for this level of firefighter

Knowledge

  • General knowledge and awareness of hazardous materials, poisonous substances, arson detection, life safety systems, and other job-related subjects
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations; and departmental procedures, orders and notices

Skills

  • Must possess good written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent decision-making skills, required
  • Must maintain good physical condition and capabilities consistent with the physical demands of the role
  • Must possess good observation skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to sustain mental alertness, clear thinking and awareness of surroundings
  • Demonstrated mechanical and technical aptitude

Employment Level: Other

Work Conditions: The Volunteer Firefighter will be expected to respond to calls and work in all types of weather and conditions. Volunteer Firefighters may have to enter hazardous areas and will be expected to at all times perform work consistently adhering to established safety expectations and practices.
