Ontario Investing $9.3 Million in Amherstburg to Build More Homes
Funding will enable up to 1101 homes and keep workers on the job

AMHERSTBURG — Anthony Leardi, MPP for the riding of Essex, announced the Ontario government is investing $9,306,990 in water infrastructure to help build approximately 1101 new homes in the town of Amherstburg. The announcement was made at the Amherstburg Knights of Columbus Hall. The funding is being delivered through the province’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (HEWSF), a stream of the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP).
“This investment is about building more homes,” said MPP Anthony Leardi. “This $9.3 million investment means that families can live in Amherstburg. It also means that you can retire in Amherstburg and stay in Amherstburg near your children and your grandchildren. Amherstburg is a great place to live.”
Amherstburg will use the funding for it’s Southeast Quadrant Sanitary and Water Servicing project, which will install new sanitary and potable water infrastructure within the town. The project includes a sanitary pumping station, force main, sewers, and watermain. This project will help unlock more housing opportunities and support economic growth in the local community.
"The Southeast Quadrant Sanitary and Potable Water Servicing project is a transformative step forward for Amherstburg, unlocking the largest remaining un-serviced area within our settlement boundary and paving the way for over 1,100 new homes, including single-family, duplex, and fourplex units. With the addition of a new pumping station, 1.7 km of water main, and over 4 km of sanitary infrastructure, this investment lays the groundwork for sustainable growth. We are incredibly grateful to the Province of Ontario for their generous grant funding and to MPP Anthony Leardi for his strong support in making this project a reality” said Mayor of Amherstburg, Michael Prue.
The MHIP is part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario and includes historic investments in housing- and community-enabling infrastructure that will help municipalities deliver the core infrastructure needed, such as roads and water systems, to lay the foundation for new homes in communities across the province.
“In the face of economic uncertainty, our government is investing in the future for the people of Ontario by doubling down on our plan to build,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “With our additional investments in the MHIP, we’re unlocking more housing and building critical infrastructure that will protect communities, keep workers on the job and lay the groundwork for a stronger economy.”
This round of funding brings the total number of homes enabled in Ontario through the MHIP to about 800,000. Investing in local infrastructure is part of the province’s more than $200 billion capital plan to build and improve transit, highways, hospitals, schools, and other critical public infrastructure, while strengthening the economy for the future.
