Provincial Plaque Unveiled for Historic River Canard Bridge

The Ontario Heritage Trust, together with the County of Essex, the Town of Amherstburg and the Town of LaSalle, unveiled a new provincial plaque today recognizing the historic River Canard Bridge. The plaque highlights the bridge’s significance as a Depression-era structure that blended aesthetic design with emerging engineering practices during a period of rapid growth in Ontario.

The River Canard Bridge, located between Malden Road and North Townline Road in one of Ontario’s oldest Francophone settlements, has been a vital crossing since the first bridge was built in 1793. The current 1937 bowstring bridge is now one of the few remaining examples of a once-common design built to support increasing automobile travel in the early 20th century.

The plaque is now installed and available for public viewing, with one on each side of the bridge that straddles the Town of Amherstburg and the Town of LaSalle.
