Winter Water Care Reminder

With colder temperatures, residents are encouraged to protect water meters and pipes from freezing.

The Town is responsible for water service lines from the property line to the water main, while homeowners are responsible from the property line into and inside the building(s). While it is the Town’s responsibility to read and maintain water meters, protecting water meters from the elements is the homeowner’s responsibility.

Extra precautions should be taken if meters are located in basements, crawl spaces, under mobile homes, or along outside walls, as freezing can lead to leaks and flooding when pipes thaw.

  • Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls using pipe insulation or heat tape.
  • Seal air leaks around windows, doors, and where pipes enter the home to keep cold air out.
  • Keep indoor temperatures consistent, even overnight or when you’re away.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
  • Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold to keep water moving and reduce pressure buildup.
  • Disconnect outdoor hoses and shut off exterior water valves if possible.
  • Know where your main water shutoff is, so you can act quickly if a pipe freezes or bursts.

Stay warm and take steps to prevent damage during cold snaps.
