Happy Halloween, Amherstburg!

Happy Halloween, Amherstburg!

The Government of Canada offers the following Halloween safety recommendations to help families enjoy a fun and safe Halloween, from choosing costumes and decorating safely to staying visible while trick-or-treating and checking treats before eating.

  • Choose safe costumes: Ensure costumes fit properly, allow clear vision and are bright or reflective to improve visibility. Use face paint instead of masks when possible, choose soft accessories, and keep costumes away from open flames.
  • Decorate safely: Have adults carve pumpkins, keep walkways clear, ensure outdoor lighting is working, and use battery-powered candles instead of open flames. Keep matches, lighters and button batteries out of children's reach.
  • Stay safe while trick-or-treating: Supervise young children and encourage older children to travel in groups along planned routes through well-lit areas. Remind children to use sidewalks, cross at intersections and designated crosswalks, carry flashlights, and never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.
  • Be visible and dress for the weather: Wear bright or reflective clothing, use flashlights, and bring extra layers if temperatures are expected to drop throughout the evening.
  • Check treats before eating: Inspect all treats and discard anything that is opened, unwrapped, damaged or appears unsafe.
  • Watch for choking hazards: Avoid giving small, hard or chewy candies to children under three. Check toys and novelty items for small parts and button batteries that could pose a danger to young children.

As trick-or-treaters head out across town tonight, please slow down, stay alert and have a fun and safe evening!
