Now Hiring: Building Clerk

The Corporation of the Town of Amherstburg is currently recruiting for a Building Clerk.
Reporting to the Chief Building Official, the Building Clerk provides customer service and information to the public on matters relating to building practices, general planning practices, zoning By-laws and other legislation.
Responsibilities
- Process and ensure accuracy of permits for portable and permanent signs, accessory structures, single family dwellings, decks, pools, demolition, water, sewer, plumbing, change of use, etc. Input and track data for such permits
- Prepare permits and gather information from other departments and authorities as required, assist applicants through the building permit application process
- Follow up with customers, close out permits and return financial deposits for permits
- Collect all fees for permits, issue permits and balance cash
- Maintain electronic files and hard copies of municipal records with respect to individual properties
- Schedule inspections and appointments for the Building Department staff and input inspection reports
- Update the Building Department’s page on the Town’s website
- Answer incoming calls for the Building/Planning Department and respond to inquiries related to zoning, aerial photos via GIS mapping, site plan information, permit processes, and other related matters
- Receive and take messages and give information pertaining to Building/Planning Departments by telephone and to the general public at the counter
- Provide clerical support for the Heritage Committee, plaquing program, heritage designation program, and update the Heritage section of the Town’s website
- Perform clerical duties including but not limited to correspondence, lawyers searches, editing reports to Council, standard form letters, work orders, preparing Deferral of Development Charge agreements and all information regarding same
- Provide clerical assistance to the Planning Department as required, coordinate personal vacation schedule with the Planning Department Clerical Staff
- Prepare monthly report for Windsor-Essex County Development Commission
- Prepare monthly statistics and mail to Statistics Canada, CMHC, and the Amherstburg Post Office
- Type draft By-laws when required
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Successful completion of Grade 12 education (OSSD or equivalent) plus a 1 year college diploma in office administration or a related discipline is required
- Knowledge of terms of construction and zoning By-law
- Knowledge and understanding of blueprints, site plans, calculations and measurements
- Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Be tactful and diplomatic in explaining Town policies and procedures
- Ability to carry out specialized work practices and procedures with excellent organization skills
- Ability to perform tasks with frequent interruptions while meeting deadlines based on the Building Code Act and other reporting timelines
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook
- Knowledge of general office procedures and general office equipment
Work Experience
- 2 to 3 years’ previous job related experience in municipal government and/or office administration

Work Conditions
POSITION PARTICULARS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (37.5 hours per week)
- This union position has an hourly wage as described in the current Collective Agreement
- Work involves sitting and working on a computer for long periods of time, and light lifting up to 10 kg.
The 2026 wage range for this unionized position is $33.63 to $37.01 per hour.
