Now Hiring: Landscape Technician/General Labourer

The Corporation of the Town of Amherstburg is recruiting for a Landscape Technician/General Labourer (Permanent Full-Time)
Reporting to the Manager of Parks and Naturalized Areas, the Landscape Technician/General Labourer will perform functions in accordance with established operating procedures, departmental and corporate policies, sound horticultural and construction principles and practices, with a focus on quality customer service and continuous improvement processes.
Responsibilities
- Perform horticultural duties, including but not limited to preparation of planting beds, planting and maintaining annual, perennial, shrub and tree beds to current industry standards, and watering
- Repair and maintenance of underground irrigation systems, monitoring automatic controllers/timers, as well as opening and winterizing the systems
- Mowing, line trimming, fertilizing, aerating, rolling, topdressing and over seeding turf where required
- Follow all safety policies and procedures
- Assist with monitoring for disease, blight, pests and make recommendations and implement appropriate treatments on turf areas and plant material
- Execute interlocking brick installations, repairs and maintenance
- Painting and maintaining park benches, picnic tables, etc.
- Perform and record daily circle checks of vehicles and report defects to the Mechanic and or Manager
- Assist with set-up, tear down, and clean-up for special events
- Performing snow removal and de-icing duties
- Performing interior and exterior building maintenance as assigned
- Complete and hand in daily duty sheets; reporting on variances in daily work plans, vandalism, mechanical difficulties and damage
- Remove and/or flag obstacles hazardous to employees or the public or that interferes with the safe operation of vehicles or equipment, and duly note and report such conditions to a Manager
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Must have a 2-year post-secondary certificate or diploma in Horticulture, Forestry or other related field of study and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in Horticulture, or a Grade 12 diploma (or equivalent) and a minimum of 3 years’ of relevant Horticulture experience
- Must possess a Class D driver’s license with Z endorsement in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, and provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment
- Must have knowledge of proper horticultural practices, pest and diseases identification and mitigation, landscape construction and utilizing equipment necessary to perform these tasks
- Certifications in Chainsaw, Fall Arrest Protection & Power Operated Work Platform (Manlift) Operations, and Confined Space Entry is an asset
- A valid Pesticide Exterminator License from the Ministry Of Environment is an asset
- Must possess an understanding of the MTO’s Book 7 for Temporary Conditions
- Must be familiar with and follow all safety policies and procedures
- Must have demonstrated good public relations skills and effective communication skills
- Must be able to work alone with minimal supervision and as part of a team

Work Conditions
- This full-time, union position has an hourly rate as described in the current Collective Agreement.
- The 2026 rate of pay is $33.63/hour
- Hours of work include various shifts, including split shifts as required, evenings, weekends and holidays
- This position involves a variety of physical activities including lifting (up to 90lbs), digging, shoveling, raking, climbing ladders, pull starting equipment, operating small and large vehicles and equipment
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
